We are all fascinated by the intelligence on our everyday use devices which leaves many of us surprised, shocked, spooked and wondering how does it work?

To understand how software developers are making websites, apps, devices intelligent; we first need to understand the technology behind it - Artificial Intelligence (AI)

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

What is Cognitive Services?

Cognitive Services provides access to pre-build AI models such as vision/speech recognition, sentiment/emotion detections and many more; so that they can be consumed and customized (with some limitations) based on individual needs and circumstances.

Think of cognitive services as an abstraction layer (in form of APIs) that brings access to complicated and sophisticated machine learning algorithms (which requires scientists and experts from different areas to be designed and developed) in the hands of every developer without requiring expertise.

There are several Cognitive Services providers, however, following are the biggest players in this field -

  • Microsoft
  • Amazon
  • Google

Although all Microsoft, Google, Amazon offer somewhat similar Cognitive Services they all have some unique services and I have done a comparison of services offered by all three in terms of ease of use, available resources, support and cost which I will share in another post but for the context of this post lets explore cognitive service offerings from Microsoft next.
